How to Choose a Facility

With spring quickly approaching and the warm weather around the corner we know the inevitable is coming shorts and swimsuit season. Many of us may begin to seek other types of exercise for many reasons. After many years of running you may be seeking exercise without compromising the knees, ankles and hips. Sure, you may continue to walk and run, but at some point in our forties we may opt for hydraulic machines either at home or in a gym and many of us try new ways to stay in shape, such as Yoga.
If you are looking for a gym or workout facility- there are many new ones around. With all the new business moving in how do you decide which place is best for you? First, check out the facilities- take a tour, ask about hours and if and when instructors are available for instruction. Ask many questions, for example, are all your instructors certified? Who cleans and floors and equipment, and how often? Most gyms have a membership fee, be clear on their cancellation policies and how long you must commit to this gym or facility. Also, try out each facility at least 2 times, take two different classes and go at 2 different times of day to see how busy the facilities are and if you feel comfortable in the surroundings.
Next, ask yourself some questions- like, after I achieve my results, can I go into harder classes or challenge myself with the given equipment? Are there opportunities for me to learn about proper technique or, am I on my own? Remember, you are making a commitment to this facility for a year or more. Now there are facilities that do not ask for a membership and they fall into studios. A studio can be a dance studio, a yoga studio or a Pilates studio. Studios usually ask clients to purchase packages of classes or sessions for a fee without a membership contract.
Choose a place that is convenient for you to get to and continue to go to. Yes, you can exercise at home, but it is not the same as getting in a class and feeling the energy of the group of people you are with, and group instruction will also bring you to your competitive edge with the help and encouragement of others. Choose a place that you would go to even if your friends were not there. Exercise is something you need to do for yourself! It will empower you, make you feel better and live a more fulfilling life.
A study was done with thousands of people over the age of 65. They were asked what regrets if any they had as they entered the last stages of their life. They all said the same thing, #1- They wished they had taken better care of their health, #2- they wished they had worked less and played more (exercise is playing) #3- they wished they had taken more risks (Risks include trying new things, i.e.- Yoga, boxing, spin, dance, etc.)
So play, have fun, take risks and eat better- you only have one body- take care of it.
You cant keep a balance unless youve got a centerIf you work from that center, you dont lose you way in all the conflicting and confusing avenues which are part of life- Sri Daya Mata
